Kayaking Skills, Ocean River Sports and Mothership Adventures. 2012.

Once again, Victoria’s premier outdoor gear and adventure source has collaborated with us to provide a top-notch kayaking skills-building work shop. We ran tours in Desolation Sound and the Broughton Archipelago and we were really pleased to have one couple join us again from the workshop of 2011.

Here the ORS lead guide, Garry Doran, is relaxing on the job . . .

And for so early in the season, the group was really lucky so come across a group of transient orca!

Here is Gary working on the water.

“and another roll, please.”

What great weather in Desolation Sound and early in the season we had the whole place to ourselves.

Our season begins, with Coastal History!

Our long time family friend and locally famous historian, Jeanette Taylor, has been an strong supporter, advocate, tour leader for us on the Columbia III. This year she joined us for  2 tours that were as popular as ever.

Now that’s close to the shore! But Jeanette likes to get really close to the pictographs. Now that's close to the shore! Jeanette is passionate about pictographs and nothing will stand between her and a "good look" at her latest find>

Jeanette loves to recount all the stories she has learned about the coast. She “recounts history”, as Skipper, I “tell stories”. You can bank on Jeanette’s stories, but be a little more careful using me as a reference.

Our daughter, Farlyn has spent time as First Mate on Raincoast Conservation’s research vessel, Achiever, and made good friends with an excellent, (and very energetic !!!) cook, Gem Salsberg. This summer Gem helped for a month and Fern got to guide for a break. Gem is an avid photographer and artist as well.

“Slip her surly bounds . . .”

I say this every year, but really, it is true. We toil diligently, doggedly all winter long on the mothership and the business. We pay great attention to tiny details guests will never see or realize, but all the efforts are entirely focused towards finally leaving the dock for our season! Whales, dolphins, sunsets, snow capped peaks, new friends, that is the motivation behind this whole endeavour.

Here Fern and I finally leave home with the COLUMBIA III to begin our 2012 season. Luke drops the mooring lines and we are away!!!!_-2-5

I back away from the home dock, sound the air horn so everyone knows we are leaving and Miray and Theo wave from the shore . . .  well, Theo’s was a pretty small wave.

And there she goes . .  . The mothership won’t be home until mid to late October          . . .    ” Safe travels”.
